· The Gems in the Dunes project, part of the Back from the Brink programme, has been working to secure the future for natterjack toads by managing local sand dune habitats along the Sefton Coast. Since the project started in July , 36 volunteers have been involved in Estimated Reading Time: 5 mins.
The natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita) is a toad native to sandy and heathland areas of are 60–70 mm in length, and are distinguished from common toads by a yellow line down the middle of the back, and parallel paratoid glands. They have relatively short legs, which gives them a distinctive gait, contrasting with the hopping movement of many other toad : Amphibia.
Site 3) Just below the arm of the yellow digger in the photo below there used to be a natterjack breeding pool!! Sadly no more. Site 4) This site used to be in the yard of a cement works, with piles of sand lying around and some shallow pools. The works have now gone but as can be seen the site is still open/undamaged and the pools are still there.
